The Nikkei reports that Suzuki Motor plans to commercialize a hydrogen powered fuel cell motorcycle, with plans to start testing it on public roads in 2016 once Japan’s transport ministry finalizes the relevant safety and environmental standards. The high-pressure hydrogen tank is small enough for a motorcycle.

Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha have just collectively promised to develop a slew of hydrogen-reliant engines designed to power small vehicles. While this is supposed to encompass construction equipment, small boats, airborne drones, and even motorcycles, the scheme doesn’t seem to focus on automobiles.

Intelligent Energy and the Suzuki Motor Corporation have created a joint venture company called SMILE FC System Corporation to develop and manufacture air-cooled fuel cell systems for a range of industry sectors. SMILE FC System Corporation will be headquartered in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka, with operations initially based in Yokohama.

Suzuki Motor Corporation nd Intelligent Energy jointly unveiled the Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter ( earlier post ) in London’s Living Room, City Hall, London. The first public road tests of the Suzuki Burgman will be conducted initially at Loughborough. Range is 350 km (217 miles)—comparable to a conventional Burgman scooter.
