And EV owners would become entrepreneurs, selling electricity back to the grid. And indeed, that’s how promoters of vehicle-to-grid technology perceive the EV.

IHS forecasts that 9% of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in North America will include attached storage in 2018. According to the IHS “Energy Storage in PV Report - 2014,” commercial buildings are subject to peak demand charges, which are based on the maximum power drawn from the grid during the billing period.

SolarCity has unveiled a smart energy storage system to address rising utility demand charges and increasing grid outages affecting businesses. Elon Musk is the Chairman of Solar City, and Chairman and CEO of Tesla Motors. SolarCity points out that the utility grid is aging and outages are increasing.
