It seems a spark is needed to get us back to the showrooms – so are the leading manufacturers right to put their faith in green cars? However, the company’s bright spark remains its green efforts. Honda too has pinned its recovery hopes on green cars, pushing both hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell technology. Averting a slump.

With payments of up to $4,500 for motorists willing to swap their ageing gas guzzling vehicles for more fuel efficient ones, it seemed like a ‘can’t lose’ scheme with consumers getting cheaper cars, the automotive industry enjoying more sales and the environment boosted by a reduction in harmful emissions. So is this scheme green at all?

I suspect without some explicit direction from the top, prodded from those of us below, the automakers will do everything to achieve the requirements with conventional vehicles, eschewing the greater near term cost and long-term benefit of transitioning toward plug-in electric drive components and batteries. Such as the $1.1 No plug, no deal!
