A brief moment in EV history passed us by about a decade ago, when the little-known VIA Motors introduced their lineup of VTRUX hybrid-electric vehicles. Lutz was a staunch supporter of GM’s plug-in hybrid of the time, the Cruze-based Volt. VTRUX trucks (Silverados) were claimed to manage 25 miles per gallon combined.

The diesel share of new US vehicle sales in 2018 exceeded that of hybrid vehicles, which came in at almost 2% of total sales, as well as the sales of plug-in electric vehicles (plug-in hybrids and full-battery-electric vehicles combined), which also came in at around 2% of total sales. The Department of Energy (DOE) plans to switch to an all-hybrid fleet within three years, and is leasing 753 hybrids from GSA this year: 334 Ford Fusions, 273 Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, 145 Ford Escape sport utility vehicles and one Honda Insight. DOE paid for the additional cost of leasing hybrid vehicles.
