When we turn up the heat in our homes and workplaces, we must balance our personal need for warmth with the global impact of burning fossil fuels like oil, gas, coal, and biomass. These initiatives have largely focused on renewable electric power generation, distribution, and storage. The apparent contradictions do not end there.

California-based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has added 25 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to its distribution fleet as part of a partnership with Ryder System, Inc. At the distribution center, Fresh & Easy has utilized plug-in electrical stand-by technology so no fuel is used to run refrigeration units on parked trailers.

750,000 to research value-based design options for the standardization of plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) batteries. This project includes $150,000 in match funding from San Diego Gas & Electric. Anaergia Services of Carlsbad received $395,121 to demonstrate a process which will convert green waste into renewable natural gas.

Palo Alto’s government has set a very aggressive Sustainability and Climate Action Plan with a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 80 percent below the 1990 level by the year 2030.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.
