Volvo Cars will extend its range of compact cars into new segments based on its new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA)—a smaller version of Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) ( earlier post ). The company also announced its electrification strategy in which plug-in hybrids will be introduced across its entire range.

Volvo Cars revealed the XC90, its new 7-seat SUV, at an event in Sweden. Top of the model range will be the XC90 Twin Engine—a plug-in hybrid delivering around 400 hp (298 kW) with carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions of around 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle). This past week was certainly quite a whirlwind of EV news and developments from Volvo’s plans to end production of ICE vehicles by 2030, yet another proposal to reform the federal EV tax credit, chip shortages, Washington state’s plans to ban ICE vehicles by 2030, Lucid Air delay, Fisker to partner with Foxconn, and much, much more.

This is in part due to the collapse of the Italian and French markets, on which small cars are heavily reliant for sales—in 2019, 38% of A and B segment registrations in Europe occurred in Italy and France. Registrations of SUVs fell by 48% to 338,300 units while increasing their market share to almost 40%.

Plug-ins are trending in key markets around the country, although much of the action remains focused in California and other West Coast states. The Model S is the best-selling plug-in car in the U.S. has fully embraced EVs and, after years of teasing with snazzy concepts, the real hardware is for sale–and is selling well.
