SUV registrations totalled 556,400 units during the month, up by only 0.7% But the most worrying result from June was not the continuous diesel decline, but the slowdown in demand for SUVs. The first is that the poor conditions of the wider market are finally impacting SUVs, which are usually more expensive than regular car types.

This is in part due to the collapse of the Italian and French markets, on which small cars are heavily reliant for sales—in 2019, 38% of A and B segment registrations in Europe occurred in Italy and France. Registrations of SUVs fell by 48% to 338,300 units while increasing their market share to almost 40%.

Tesla helped former shareholder Toyota to bring back the Toyota RAV4 EV , an electric SUV and also aided its other OEM shareholder, Daimler (which also has since divested its Tesla shares), with the Smart ED and B-Class Electric. X marks the spot of Tesla’s expansion. Ford has had little to show in the EV market some some time.

They are now considering electric hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery electric (BEV) and soon hydrogen electric (FCEV) vehicles. If you have only a few cars for sales reps or maybe a van for local deliveries, then going direct to a dealer may work.

Official electric range of 320km is wildly optimistic and it’s a pretty joyless steer, but here’s a small SUV with warranty to tempt you into EV life. We found only four for sale, with $28,880 for a 190km range 2014 60Ah version with 100,000km the cheapest. The range extender hybrid i3s are basically the same price.

Representatives of GM stoked the clamor for the Volt, and a Saturn Vue plug-in hybrid sat on the show floor. But neither car, GM execs made clear, will appear for sale on a showroom floor for more that two years. Nissan and Renault have now promised tens of thousands of EVs on three continents by 2011.
