Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.

And I’m one those million since they’re counting plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as well as full battery electrics. Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV – 7,988. Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV – 4,427. Tesla and GM both exceeded the state’s 200,000-unit sales cap on rebates. Tesla Model Y EV – 61,022.

Production of the Roadster, the company’s initial product, ended after deliveries totaling 2,500, but a new version of the Roadster is due at some point. has fully embraced EVs and, after years of teasing with snazzy concepts, the real hardware is for sale–and is selling well. Some 700,000 BEVs and PHEVs, plus a few hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, were sold in the Middle Kingdom in 2017. By 2025, “the forecast for (sales of) all electric vehicles in China is 5 million,” says Drobnak. That plant has an annual production capacity of 180,000 units. Start of production is set for mid-2020, says Drobnak.

The intent of this provision is clear as President Biden and lawmakers in Congress have stated their concerns over China taking the lead in the production of electric vehicles, batteries, and autonomous vehicle technology. Currently only the Polestar 2 and Volvo S90 T8 PHEV are being produced in China for sale in the US.
