PACCAR announced that a Kenworth T680 fuel cell electric vehicle and a battery electric Peterbilt Model 579EV became the first Class 8 zero emissions vehicles to drive to the 14,115 foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. We are very excited about the work Kenworth and Peterbilt have done in the development of zero emissions technology.

The Peterbilt Model 388 tractors are equipped with a Westport HD 15-liter natural gas engine and fuel system. We believe that Peterbilt is a leader in alternate fuel technology.

The Loop-powered, long-haul trucks will work in demanding road operations, towing up to 80,000 pounds of freight throughout the San Diego and Los Angeles regions. Loop fuel cell range extenders will be integrated by TransPower into two Peterbilt 579 truck gliders in early 2019.

This is the first large-scale demonstration of zero-emission Class 8 trucks that involves major manufacturers, including BYD, Kenworth, Peterbilt (both Paccar companies) and Volvo. Full battery-electric trucks will be developed by BYD and a team consisting of Peterbilt and California start-up TransPower.
