Now an eight-year veteran on the Australian scene, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. A new generation of the pioneering mid-sizer has just launched, with 45 per cent larger battery (now 20kWh), a pure electric range of up to 84km (NEDC), all-wheel-drive and seating for up to seven.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

Ontario, Canada) has taken delivery of the first all-electric vehicle to be used in a commercial fleet application in Canada—the REV 300 ACX (a retrofit Ford Escape). The REV ACX features a 160-kilometer range (99-mile), and a top speed of 144 km/h (89 mph). Charge time is 3.8 Burlington Hydro Inc. to 5 hours at 240V.
