New study suggests reported PAH emissions in oil sands region greatly underestimated

Green Car Congress

Results from a new modeling assessment of contamination in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) suggest that officially reported emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in that region have been greatly underestimated. PAHs are highly volatile, meaning they escape into the air much more than many people think.

EPA Formally Requests Information About Chemicals Used in Hydraulic Fracturing

Green Car Congress

Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which large volumes of water, sand and chemicals are injected at high pressures to extract oil and natural gas from underground rock formations. The process creates fractures in formations such as shale rock, allowing natural gas or oil to escape into the well and be recovered.

NRC report concludes hydraulic fracturing poses low risk for causing earthquakes, but risks are higher for wastewater injection wells; CCS impact undetermined

Green Car Congress

Hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) extracts natural gas by injecting a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals in short bursts at high pressure into deep underground wells. The process cracks the shale rock formation and allows natural gas to escape and flow up the well, along with some wastewater.

Oil Sands CEO Calls for Allowing Increased Industry GHG Emissions

Green Car Congress

Marcel Coutu, chief executive officer of Canadian Oil Sands Trust and Chairman of the Board of Syncrude Canada, is calling for allowing Alberta’s oil sands producers to significantly increase their greenhouse gas emissions, even if that means forcing other sectors to take on additional expensive obligations to meet Canada’s climate change targets.

Increase in US rig count will not cap oil prices

Green Car Congress

The impact of rising oil prices on North American light tight oil (LTO) production is said to be a “Catch 22”, the title of Joseph Heller’s popular 1961 novel set in WWII. So this avenue to escape the war didn’t work for the book’s main character John Yossarian. oil rig count as a precursor of when US LTO would fall.
