Alberta Innovates has teamed up with Natural Resources (NRCan) and industry partners to take three clean oil sands technologies to commercial demonstration. This announcement is a result of NRCan’s Oil and Gas Clean Tech Program. Cenovus Energy will test an oil sands extraction technology using a solvent-driven process.

Increased efficiency in all of the new Ecotec engines is achieved in part through lower engine friction, which was reduced by up to 16% using new technologies such as a variable-displacement oil pump. A variable displacement two-stage oil pump provides high oil pressure under high speed and load, but switches to a low-pressure mode for improved fuel economy during typical driving conditions. A large capacity oil cooler extends the oil change interval and ensures engine durability. Total displacement is 1,995 cc.

All of the gasoline engines feature direct injection and dual overhead camshafts with continuously variable valve timing, which help optimize power and efficiency, as well as reduce emissions. The new engines also have increased-authority cam phasing to minimize compromiss between efficiency, performance, emissions and drivability.

The MSG process, under license from Idaho National Laboratory, uses a combination of molten sodium salts (sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide) to convert a carbon feedstock and water into hydrogen. Oil sands operators use Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) to produce hydrogen from natural gas.
