A new study carried out by University College Dublin (UCD) academics has found that under typical Irish commuting conditions, the Toyota Prius IV (fourth-generation) hybrid ( earlier post ) drives in zero emissions mode (ZEV) for significantly more than half (62%) of the time and more than 40% (40.4%) of the distance covered.

BEV sales in the UK have grown rapidly over the past year – with demand rising, at least in part due to petrol shortages, which dried up many motorists’ gas tanks in September. For example, catalytic converters developed by Catagen Ltd in Northern Ireland have helped car manufacturers reduce emissions.

Also in the highest case scenario, a combination of high EV uptake; improvements in the efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs); and demand management measures to reduce the amount people drive could potentially deliver a 75% reduction in car emissions by 2030. Eleven EU Member States breached air pollution ceilings in 2015 mostly due to high emissions from agricultural and transport sources, according to new data and a briefing released by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
