Startup electric car company Aurica Motors announced a plan to keep the NUMMI plant, which employs 4,700 people, from shutting down when Toyota leaves on 31 March. Planned production would be 5,000 cars in the first year of production, moving up to 50,000+ within three years. Aurica envisions a battery swap in 3 minutes or less.

The intent is to provide the utility and its customers benefits, including load leveling, back-up power, support for plug-in electric car deployment as well as grid regulation and improved distribution line efficiencies. CES holds the promise of being an integral component of the smart grid.

China’s just committed to a 50% solar subsidy in the last 30 days, Westly told us. And in the US, not only is the Obama administration providing a major stimulus program, but 31 states are enacting incentives and mandates to require clean alternative energy for utilities.

Plug-in cars are inevitable. Nissan appears intent on opening up a market for mid-price range electric cars within two years. In addition to the California funds there is federal stimulus money, $41 million by mid-April, being doled out to their projects, many of zero environmental benefit. Here's my June column.
