In the Pre-Budget Report (PBR) released on 9 December, UK Chancellor Alistair Darling announced that all electric cars will be exempt from Company Car Tax (CCT) for 5 years and electric vans will be exempt from Van Benefit Charge (VBC) for the same period.

As a result, BCG concludes, the electric car faces stiff competition from ICEs (internal combustion engines) and, based solely on total cost of ownership (TCO) economics, will not be the preferred option for most consumers. Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates battery cost will decline by almost 10% until 2025, when ZEVs will reach price parity with ICE vehicles. In 2017, Tesla Model S had the farthest EPA-rated range for an all-electric vehicle, at 315 miles. In 2016 there was one charging plug for about every 6 electric cars.

The eagerness to reward green car buyers for their purchases now looks likely to extend to Israel, where the finance ministry is planning new regulations on car purchasing according to Reuters. It is expected that the cars with the highest fuel consumption levels, such as SUVs, will face increased taxes and duties.
