IRENA sees renewable hydrogen at least cost-possible within decade

Green Car Congress

Hydrogen produced with renewable electricity could compete on costs with fossil fuel alternatives by 2030, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). For that, today’s manufacturing capacity of less than 1 GW would have to massively grow beyond 100 GW in the next 10 to 15 years.

Study finds behavior-influencing policies remain critical for mass market success of low-carbon vehicles

Green Car Congress

Policies to entice consumers away from fossil-fuel powered vehicles and normalize low carbon, alternative-fuel alternatives, such as electric vehicles, are vital if the world is to significantly reduce transport sector carbon pure-emissions, according to a new study. —McCollum et al. —David McCollum.

Fossil Fuels Renewable Energy and EV Modern Life

Setec Powerr

More than one generation, if not a bit longer, the transition to an environmentally sustainable economy. The issue is: How do these impacts compare to the positive impacts and, in the case of renewable energy projects, how do they compare to fossil fuel alternatives? All economic development projects have negative impacts.

MIT study concludes that absent climate policy, coal-to-liquids could account for around a third of global liquid fuels by 2050

Green Car Congress

They modeled different scenarios, varying the stringency of future carbon policies, the availability of biofuels and the ability to trade carbon allowances on an international market. In this scenario, CTL has the potential to account for about a third of the global liquid-fuel supply by 2050; at that level it would supply about 4.6%

CEC report sets out North American plan for change and investment to achieve sustainable freight transportation

Green Car Congress

Reducing the environmental impact of freight transportation in the face of increasing trade and economic growth in North America requires much more than continued progress on fuel economy and transport technology. It is estimated that the North American economy will grow by 70–130% between the years 2005 and 2030.

MIT team develops new synthetic pathway and modular engineering toolkit for direct biosynthesis of odd-chain molecules for fuels and chemicals

Green Car Congress

The interest in microbial synthesis of fuels and chemicals has increased substantially as efforts to transition toward a “bio-based” economy have gained momentum; however, the ability to more broadly use biological systems for chemical production is somewhat limited by the natural repertoire of biosynthetic pathways.
