The new engine will achieve high efficiency using the Atkinson Cycle with an 18:1 compression ratio, combined with aggressive engine downsizing. Engine downsizing is a key tool in improving fuel economy. The eccentric carrier design was chosen for its low cost and rigid support of the main bearings.

Toyota’s targeted cost reductions in fuel cell vehicles. In a news conference at the Japan National Press Club on Friday, Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda said that the company plans to begin mass production of electric vehicles in the US in 2012, followed by US production of fuel cell vehicles in 2015.
