In its new report on downsized and boosted gasoline engine technologies ( earlier post ) the ICCT highlighted Ricardo’s work on an “extreme” Miller cycle concept with high (13:1) compression ratio (CR) and central direct injection in a downsized boosted engine. A long exhaust stroke then extracts maximum efficiency.

At 48 volts, a VTES electric supercharger will transform 7kW of battery power into a highly boosted charge of air for downsized gasoline and diesel engines. There will be no torque deficit or other tradeoffs from essential engine downsizing and higher gearing, which now dominates the development of internal combustion engines.

CPT says that the RegEnBoost system enables a typical family-sized car to achieve less than 100 g/km CO 2 with a 1-liter gasoline engine, but when required can offer the same lively performance and in-gear acceleration of a 2-liter naturally aspirated powertrain. Hence the industry trend to dual-charging systems, CPT notes.
