At its monthly meeting in Detroit today, the General Motors Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Fritz Henderson as Director, President and CEO of the company, according to GM Chairman Ed Whitacre. I look forward to working with the entire GM team as we now begin the next chapter of this great company. —Ed

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. GM’s identify in the US starts with its four core brands.

Since GM will be one of the first to the EV market with its Volt in 2011, we came to film them being put together through the multiple stages of the car manufacturing process. Describing himself as anti-tax but pro-carbon tax, Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk risked the backlash of US motorists by declaring that petrol should probably cost $10 a gallon. Chryslers first electric car, set to be introduced late next year around the same time as General Motors Chevrolet Volt, will be a sports car with a zero-to-60 time of under five seconds and a top speed of 120 miles per hour. Power will come from a 200 kilowatt, or 268 horsepower, electric motor.

Electric car supporters are rising to defend General Motors’ development of the Chevy Volt after the Obama Administration’s automotive task force proclaimed that the car was probably too expensive to be commercially successful in the near future. is hoping to launch the Volt in late 2010 with a price tag of about $40,000.

We can now say with confidence that it is worth waiting 70+ days to make the shift to the left side of the car, following a brief spin around Cobo Hall in a prototype vehicle during the SAE World Congress here in Detroit. The car is noisy, with the hum of the electric motor omnipresent when youre not at a standstill. Small size.
