At the Clean Energy Ministerial in Washington, DC, 19-20 July, ministers reaffirmed their commitment to previously-announced targets for the deployment of electric vehicles, which the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates will create global market momentum leading to at least 20 million electric vehicles on the road worldwide by 2020.

An old-fashioned triode vacuum tube does that using a voltage applied to its grid electrode. A second wire also wrapped around the core forms a control winding. The control winding includes many turns of wire, so by passing a relatively small direct current through it, the iron core can be forced into or out of saturation.

As far as recharging goes, cars with the smaller battery get 80kW DC charging while the 52kWh R5s can be topped up at up to 100kW. Under a venture with the motto “From Road to Grid”, Audi is therefore currently working on a concept to convert old batteries into stationary energy stores. A first test setup located near Ingolstadt recently started supplying the grid. The majority of stations currently available on the market support DC charging with 50 kW.
