The US Department of Energy has selected 13 projects for investment of up to $62 million over five years to research, develop, and demonstrate Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems capable of providing low-cost electrical power. These improvements will all be made in the hopes of driving down the cost of solar energy.

A number of biofuels projects, including one from BP Biofuels in Highlands County, Florida, have been canceled before starting major construction. Strategic corporate shifts because of increased availability of low-cost natural gas. In addition, many projects have experienced delays in their commercialization attempts.

Topic Area 1: Pre-Pilot Scale-Up of Integrated Biorefineries Algenesis Corporation, “Pre-Pilot Scale Production of Algae-based Jet Fuel and Polyurethane Monomers”, $4,987,974. The pilot will consist of a low cost, easy to operate, air blown gasifier coupled with LanzaTech’s second generation bioreactor (2GBR).

Of the lead recipients, 24% are small businesses, 57% are educational institutions, 11% are national labs, and 8% are large corporations. This project will develop and optimize a novel, engineered microorganism that produces a biodiesel-equivalent fuel from renewable hydrogen and carbon dioxide, at costs of less than $2.50 per gallon.
