Success could ultimately drive commercial development of solar-fuel systems designed from inception to be easily deployable almost anywhere. This project focuses on the discovery and development of semiconducting materials for solar light absorption.

Since projects were not assigned from above, the researchers formed their own groups; support for a project depended on how many people its instigator could get to work on it. The group thought it should have a computer of its own. At nearly the same time the Apple I became available, also in kit form. This had its advantages.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) Has shown some concept fuel-cell PHEVs. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. BYD also developed the motors and software for the system.
