Anderman is founder and chairman of the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC); the 13 th annual conference is scheduled for February 2013 in Pasadena, California. The report notes that despite heavy subsidies by governments and automakers, 2012 EV sales are coming short of meeting many automakers’ sales and production plans.

The findings were released at The Business of Plugging In conference in Detroit today. The purpose of this study was to examine the conditions under which consumers would purchase a PHEV. The questions were based on estimates of the likely fuel savings and cost premiums for the PHEVs in five to ten years (in today’s dollars).

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

I successfully doubled EV sales in the Pacific Northwest through a US Department of Energy project I was the principal investigator for.
