Koji Sato speaks at a Tokyo press conference on April 7 2023 announcing Toyota’s ramped-up EV commitment. The target is a 200km-plus driving range for PHEVs, which will be repositioned as the “the practical BEV”. Toyota will “strengthen” hybrid sales and “increase” the number of plug-in hybrids it offers.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

For the mid-term (2011-2020), Ford will increase its use of hybrid technology, and introduce plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) on the market. Utilities, vehicle-to-home (V2H), and vehicle-to-grid (V2G). There is also an accompanying long-term focus on clean electricity and hydrogen for fueling.

The conference was sold out; it was also essentially a PowerPoint-free zone; the basic format relied heavily on brief introductory remarks from sets of speakers representing the diverse stakeholders, followed by questions from attendees. The impact from plug-in electric vehicles on the grid could be very substantial.
