Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering are using membrane distillation technology to enable drillers to filter and reuse the produced water in the oil and gas industry, in agriculture, and other beneficial uses. The method is already being tested in Texas, North Dakota, and most recently in New Stanton, Pa.

CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder. Where leak rates are low, the comparison favors natural gas. The CIRES and NOAA team is planning another aircraft mission this spring, to expand emissions measurements from gas-producing regions stretching from Texas to North Dakota.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded an agreement to the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center (UNDEERC) to extend a study that will enhance the understanding of factors affecting oil production from the Bakken and Three Forks-Sanish formations within the Williston Basin.
