Green Commuter is a Los-Angeles-based shared mobility company that provides zero-emissions solutions for vanpools, employee transportation, and delivery vehicles.

My lifetime tally is 231 mpg, which means I’ve used less than 80 gallons of gas over the car’s 42 months on the road. The EV’s homes are as might be expected, in the more populous and wealthier pockets of the San Francisco Bay Area and sprawling Los Angeles region stretching down to San Diego. Still turning in max EV miles.

The small number of operators who run mixed-fuel fleets (diesel and gasoline, or diesel and natural gas) will understand these tradeoffs better. The company expects to sell hundreds of them, which will provide more real-world experience in a broader array of use cases. The cost equation is trickier.

While current state and federal measures are on target to reduce toxic diesel locomotive emissions 65% or more by 2020, additional measures recommended by ARB staff would ultimately provide up to 85% or greater emissions reductions within the rail yards over the same period, resulting in cleaner air for nearby residential neighborhoods as well.
