Chalmers team develops graphite-like anode for Na-ion batteries; Janus graphene

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, have developed a nanometric graphite-like anode for sodium ion (Na + storage), formed by stacked graphene sheets functionalized only on one side, termed Janus graphene. The estimated sodium storage up to C 6.9 Na is comparable to graphite for standard lithium ion batteries.

Researchers improve the performance of sodium-ion batteries by using tailored carbon anodes with hierarchical porosity

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany, have improved the performance of sodium-ion batteries ( earlier post ) by using tailor-made carbon materials with hierarchical porosity for the anode instead of common carbon-based anode materials. 1 at C/5 while exhibiting excellent rate capability and reasonable cycle life.

Planar Sodium Nickel Chloride Batteries Could Deliver 30% More Power at Lower Temperatures Than Conventional Cylindrical Versions

Green Car Congress

Schematic of a sodium-nickel chloride cell with planar design. A planar (flat) sodium-nickel chloride battery could deliver 30% more power at lower temperatures than the typical cylindrical design, according to researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). New 3-step process for conversion of kraft lignin from black liquor into green diesel

Green Car Congress

The process produces a toxic byproduct referred to as black liquor—a primarily liquid mixture of pulping residues (such as lignin and hemicellulose) and inorganic chemicals from the Kraft process (sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, for example). The kraft process converts wood into wood pulp for paper production.

Ningbo researchers propose mixed-ion Li/Na batteries

Green Car Congress

Lithium-intercalation compounds and sodium-intercalation compounds are used for anode and cathode, respectively. Sodium-ion based rechargeable batteries (SIBs, e.g., earlier post ) are of interest due to sodium’s abundance, far lower prices, and a greener synthesis while maintaining a similarity in ion-insertion chemistry.

OSU smart membrane could enable new category of high-energy, high-power energy storage for EVs

Green Car Congress

The shelf-life of stored charge in rechargeable devices does not scale linearly with maximum SP and has led to trends referred to as ‘range-anxiety’, ‘compulsive charging’, etc. Comparison of commercially available electric vehicles driving range to recharge time (min) (for a full recharge), abbreviated as MPM (and for use akin to MPG).

WMG researchers use graphene girders to improve performance of Si anodes in Li-ion batteries

Green Car Congress

Although silicon is an abundantly available element with ten times the gravimetric energy density of graphite, several performance issues continue to limit its commercial exploitation. However, it also possible to separate and manipulate a few connected layers of graphene giving a material researchers refer to as few-layer graphene (FLG).
