UC Irvine team creates long-lasting, cobalt-free, low-nickel lithium-ion batteries

Green Car Congress

In a paper published in the journal Nature Energy , the researchers report using a complex concentrated doping strategy to eliminate cobalt in a commercial NMC-532 cathode. Further, the metal’s cost keeps climbing. To become an economically viable alternative to cobalt, nickel-based batteries needed to use as little nickel as possible.
