LanzaTech, a producer of low-carbon fuels and chemicals from waste gases, was awarded a $4-million grant by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) as one of the 15 REMOTE projects ( earlier post ) receiving a combined $34 million to find advanced biocatalyst technologies that can convert natural gas to liquid fuel for transportation.

Specifically, low cost and energy-efficient processes are sought that can be demonstrated and validated under field conditions to meet needs of the nascent algal biomass industry. Algae cultures tend to be relatively dilute, and the energy requirement to remove water from the cultures can be a significant portion of the energy balance.

The stimulus package is designed to address the recession and in the short term people were anxiously awaiting two key components of the plan: clarification on the details behind “ grants in lieu of tax credits ” and awards of loan guarantees by the DOE from section 1705.
