You might not know it to look at them, but these two cars—one Swedish, one Chinese—share underpinnings and a parent company. Volvo and its Chinese parent Geely are very serious about selling cars that plug in. It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery.

FreeWire is a San Francisco-based company that has been a pioneer in flexible fast-charging technology for electric cars. The L2 models recharge from a wall outlet; each unit is equipped with dual J1772 plugs and can charge 2 vehicles at once. BP’s venturing business invested $5 million in FreeWire earlier this year.

The secret is that Polestar is an electric performance brand from Volvo and its Chinese owner, Geely Holding. There are already spaces in New York City and Los Angeles, and there are now two in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I’m located. Still a bit of a mystery. There’s a second location in Corte Madera in Marin County.

The Chinese company EHang has already offered commercial autonomous flights of its EH216 multicopter to tourists in the northeastern port city of Yantai and is now building a flight hub in its home city of Guangzhou. These would be like mini airports where the eVTOLs would take off and land, be recharged, and take on and discharge passengers.

Sure, you’ll have to plug in and recharge eventually, but with a median range of more than 250 miles per charge, you won’t have to worry about refueling for a while in a modern EV. Just don’t leave it plugged in overnight or you’ll lower the battery capacity and have to recharge more frequently. Polestar 2.
