Particulate air pollution continues to cut global life expectancy by nearly two years as progress in some countries counterbalances worsening air quality in others, according to the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI). High pollution across the entirety of Bangladesh makes it the most polluted country in the world.

Electric vehicles charged in coal-heavy regions can create more human health and environmental damages from life cycle air emissions than gasoline vehicles, according to a new consequential life cycle analysis by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University. UC stands for uncontrolled charging and CC stands for controlled charging.

In a state-by-state analysis, the researchers found that California suffers the worst health impacts from air pollution, with about 21,000 early deaths annually, mostly attributed to road transportation and to commercial and residential emissions from heating and cooking. 2000 (90% CI: 0–4,000) early deaths from ozone, according to the study.

The objections they raised for years -- "no one is interested, no one would plug in, the technology is too complex, the benefits are minimal, its just shifting the pollution from the tailpipe to the smokestack, theres no demand for these cars" -- still show up occasionally, but are by and large history. 6/15/07 General Motors Corp.
