The Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf earned the highest safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the first US crash test evaluations of plug-in electric cars. IIHS says that the result demonstrates that automakers are using the same safety engineering in new electric cars as they do in gasoline-powered vehicles.

Capitol Hill made for a strange sight earlier this week as it was surrounded by everything from two-seat sports cars to vehicles that resembled golf carts and bucket trucks. All of the cars ran on electricity or biofuels in addition to petroleum. The Chevrolet Equinox was also there, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. We'll also be taking Burning Man art projects off petroleum generators by switching them to solar electricity.
