S. Korean researchers develop new catalytic pathway for direct conversion of CO2 to liquid hydrocarbon fuels

Green Car Congress

Making hydrocarbons out of CO 2 must overcome two challenges—chemical stability of the CO 2 molecule and a cheap and renewable hydrogen source. The main products produced by the new catalyst cover the gasoline (C 5 -C 11 ) and diesel (C 12 -C 21 ) ranges, while waxy hydrocarbons (C 25+ ) are ∼15 wt%. Source: Choi et al.

Naysayer Alert – the hydrogen red herring

My Electric Car

Proponents believe such a car could be easily refuelled with hydrogen and assumed it would have greater range than a pure all-electric car. Recent developments in lithium ion batteries, and the consequential range improvements of EVs has significantly dampened enthusiasm for hydrogen fuel cells. Whitehead, J., & Washington, S.

UTA researchers demonstrate one-step solar process to convert CO2 and H2O directly into renewable liquid hydrocarbon fuels

Green Car Congress

The process uses cheap and earth-abundant catalytic materials. Further, the unusual operating conditions expand the range of materials that can be developed as photocatalysts. —Brian Dennis, UTA professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and co-principal investigator of the project.

Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not. Range is another issue if electric cars are expected to be adopted by the average American and not just used as city cars. — Larry 4.
