The utility is participating in a national consortium that recently was awarded a federal stimulus grant to purchase plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and the company is buying more trucks to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) as well. The matching stimulus grant will provide up to $2.5 million for the vehicle conversions.

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) presented the preproduction plug-in all-electric walk-in van (WIV) chassis at the 2010 National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Work Truck Show. The measure also would set aside $200,000 to provide incentives to build 100 charging stations throughout the state, since electric cars usually only last from 40 miles to 100 miles between charges.
