Everyone’s all excited that Ford just turned a profit, but they’re doing it with a fleet of uninspired crappy cars that they practically have to give away. And by that I mean the end of 2010.

The breakthrough could revolutionize electric car battery technology and pave the way for ultra-fast charging electric vehicles in as little as two years. The discovery came when MIT researchers Byoungwoo Kang and Gerbrand Ceder found out how to get a common lithium compound to release and take up lithium ions in a matter of seconds.

Range has increased, access to charging infrastructure has expanded, and major automakers have (finally) begun to actively market their EVs and to prepare for a new era of mass production. Newly charged automakers are finding themselves to be production-constrained , as EV trendsetter Tesla has been for some years.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. One wonders if the recent headway at MIT in building lithium ion cells using ?virus? takes time to build this new market and re-coup their investment.
