For people looking for the most effective way to end our addiction to oil, PHEVs have made sense because carmakers can build them now, with todays technology and using todays infrastructure.

This is not much different from diesel and gasoline which are produced from refining and cleaning crude oil (a process which heavily involves the use of hydrogen). This renewable production capacity is increasingly important to ensure the existing power grid can accept more renewable sources.

Wires have a lot going for them when it comes to moving electric power around, but they have their drawbacks too. Who, after all, hasn’t tired of having to plug in and unplug their phone and other rechargeable gizmos? Indeed, it’s hard to recharge or power a device when the air gap is just a few centimeters, much less a few meters.
