BMW Group and Vattenfall Europe have begun a second phase of the Mini E test fleet in Berlin, with the transfer of 70 MINI E electric vehicles to private customers (30 units) and fleet users (40 units). The MINI E were charged mainly at night, using certified green electricity from Vattenfall.

Some automakers keep trying to soothe it with ever-larger and heavier battery packs, so that consumers can go farther between charges. But their ability to charge to 80 percent capacity in as little as 18 minutes shows how EVs might circumvent the problem of battery overkill and still be fully viable as interstate cruisers.

Most of the brands they compete with are brands with heritage and prestige that people already connect with; BMW, Mercedes, and even Cadillac have the allure of old money. However, the sedan will get three years of complimentary 30min charging sessions at Electrify America locations. Not as well as one would hope.

The web was buzzing last week with stories about BMW’s MINI E. To recap, BMW will be leasing 500 MINI Es from dealers in New York, New Jersey and Southern California starting some time early in 2009. This is great news since the ACP 150 is the gold standard for EV motor/controller drive trains.
