The Opel Ampera has been on sale for almost two years in Europe, and has been bought by 7,700 customers, who have driven a total of 100 million kilometers (62 million miles) on pure electric power, according to Opel. In the key EV market of the Netherlands, the Ampera has market share of 40%.

The extended-range electric vehicle Ampera is Europe’s Nº1 passenger electric-drive vehicle with more than 20% market share, according to Opel sales figures from May 2012. The project will focus on driver behaviour and the operational side of running a fleet of zero-emission battery-powered cars. The thirteen countries involved in the agreement are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Over the past year the Dynamics and Control group of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) (The Netherlands) has developed a battery electric research vehicle based on a VW Lupo 3L 1.2 The Lupo EL (“Electric Lightweight”)vehicle combines a very low weight (1,060 kg, 2,337 lbs) with a large battery pack (27 kWh).

Mercedes-Benz is introducing the A-Class E-CELL, a compact five-seat battery-electric car with a range of more than 200 km (124 miles) (NEDC), targeted as a family EV for urban areas. The vehicles will be leased to selected customers in several European countries, including Germany, France and the Netherlands.
