The 2019 Kia Niro EV made its North American debut at the LA Auto Show. Combined Charging System (CCS) DC fast-charge is standard equipment, supporting an approximately 100-mile recharge in 30 minutes at on the 50 kW charger at 200 amps; 80% total battery capacity is available in 75 minutes.

Late last year, Volvo launched its very first all-electric model in North America. It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery. Where it falls down is its EPA-rated range: a mere 208 miles. My quick road test revealed both pros and cons of the XC40 Recharge.

Although Volvo’s Recharge model sales (EV and PHEV) fell 3% to 19,171, fully electric vehicles continued to see higher demand. The growth was propelled by its EV sales, which were up 17%, with 9,226 electric Volvo models handed over last month. Volvo’s EM90 features 450 miles CLTC range and a “Scandinavian living room.”

The L2 models recharge from a wall outlet; each unit is equipped with dual J1772 plugs and can charge 2 vehicles at once. The L3 fast chargers also recharge from a wall outlet; each model is compatible with CHAdeMO or Tesla standards. Freewire products currently offer Level 2 charging at 7.5 kW or DC fast charging at 50 kW.
