Here in the UK we’re so downtrodden by extortionate petrol prices that the prospect of driving fuel efficient green cars carries obvious appeal. However, what about our US neighbours where ‘gas’ prices are distinctly lower and so-called muscle cars are seen as almost iconic and part of the culture?

Describing himself as anti-tax but pro-carbon tax, Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk risked the backlash of US motorists by declaring that petrol should probably cost $10 a gallon. With the US auto industry in disarray, Tesla’s focus on premium green cars has emerged as a bright spark.

Now Lutz envisions selling hundreds of thousands of Volts a year, probably priced below $30,000. 9/4/07 Nick Reilly, the President of General Motors Asia Pacific, said that GM is looking at leasing batteries for the Volt to customers, rather than asking them to pay a prohibitive price for the new technology. People wont buy a full car.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. The Volt is, and always has been, more than than an electric car. This isnt an either-or equation — GM needs to develop more fuel efficient cars alongside the Volt, and its stupid to expect the Volt to be a money-maker out of the gate.
