Big guns in the US auto industry like General Motors and Chrysler may still be reeling from the credit crunch, but upstart electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors has achieved overall corporate profitability in July.

General Motors is working with communities such as San Francisco to develop a plan of action to establish the supporting technical and policy infrastructure required for broad commercialization of plug-in electric vehicles such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt.
