Duplicitous doublespeak has become de rigueur dialect in the auto industry. “We We strongly believe in EVs,” say auto dealers as they support efforts to slow the EV transition. Indeed, the report makes cheerful reading—for anyone who doesn’t believe in climate change, and thinks EVs are a passing fad.

But that proposal was watered down by automaker lobbying (which we’ve seen a lot of recently ), primarily through exceptions added for huge SUVs. This watering-down echoes similar recent developments in both US and EU regulatory schemes. A bill containing the new auto emissions rules will be introduced in parliament this week.

Automakers are fiercely lobbying governments to water down already-compromised emissions rules, but doing so will only lead to their doom as market entrants that are serious about EVs will continue ramping them anyway. The auto industry is electrifying, and all new cars will be electric in the relatively near future.
