Researchers in Austria and Germany are developing a process to store renewable electricity as synthetic natural through a combination of electrolysis to produce hydrogen combined with methanation using CO 2. Solar Fuel Technology , the Austria-based partner company, is setting up the industrial implementation of the process.

Phillips 66 and H2 Energy Europe have closed on a 50-50 joint venture to set up and operate a network of hydrogen refueling retail sites in Germany, Austria and Denmark. The new company plans to develop approximately 250 hydrogen refueling stations by 2026.

The company has plans for an accelerated development timeline for this facility and is targeting a commissioning date of December 2024. Since this project will reduce Uzbekistan’s dependence on natural gas by 600 million cubic metres per year, it is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually.
