The lithium-ion battery that energizes the vehicle is the most expensive component in an electric vehicle. The price parity between the IC engine vehicle and the Electric vehicle will happen once the battery price decreases. Tesla has already set up Gigafactories for battery research and manufacturing in the US and China.

KG, the automotive lithium-ion battery joint venture formed in 2008 by Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG ( earlier post ), will begin construction of its production facility this autumn in Kamenz, Germany. Production is slated to begin in 2011, with the first application of Li-ion battery systems in Mercedes vehicles from 2012.

Sumitomo Chemical will more than double its production capacity for lithium-ion secondary battery separators, marketed under the PERVIO brand name. PERVIO is chiefly used in automotive battery cells through its use in Panasonic’s high-capacity and high-energy density cylindrical lithium-ion secondary batteries.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., revealed the all-new Toyota RAV4 EV at the 26 th annual Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS26) in Los Angeles. The battery-electric SUV features a 41.8 kWh Li-ion pack, offering an expected driving range rating of approximately 100 miles (161 km). Click to enlarge.

A Bloomfield, Michigan startup is developing light- and medium-duty series plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain systems—initially as conversions, but ultimately extending to an OEM basis. ALTe already has Gen 1 proof-of-concept systems running in a Crown Vic taxi equipped with a 20 kWh Li-ion battery pack.
