Sumitomo Chemical to more than double PERVIO Li-ion separator production capacity; supplier to Panasonic, Tesla

Sumitomo Chemical will more than double its production capacity for lithium-ion secondary battery separators, marketed under the PERVIO brand name. PERVIO is chiefly used in automotive battery cells through its use in Panasonic’s high-capacity and high-energy density cylindrical lithium-ion secondary batteries. Through Panasonic, the cells with PERVIO separators are used in Tesla Motors’ Model S.

Tesla to use Umicore in Li-ion battery recycling program in Europe

Tesla Motors has launched a recycling program in Europe for its Li-ion battery packs, and will recycle its battery packs at Umicore ’s UHT facility in Belgium. Umicore’s battery recycling technology enables saving a minimum of 70% on CO 2 emissions at the recovery and refining of these metals, so it can substantially reduce the carbon footprint for the manufacturing of Lithium-Ion batteries.

Daimler, Evonik Automotive Li-ion JV to Build Factory This Fall in Kamenz; Application in Mercedes Vehicles from 2012

KG, the automotive lithium-ion battery joint venture formed in 2008 by Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG ( earlier post ), will begin construction of its production facility this autumn in Kamenz, Germany. Production is slated to begin in 2011, with the first application of Li-ion battery systems in Mercedes vehicles from 2012. One of the key technologies for this is the lithium-ion battery. In May, Daimler took a nearly 10% equity stake in US-based Tesla Motors.

Dahn Lab at Dalhousie signs exclusive 5-year research partnership with Tesla, beginning in 2016

Tesla Motor’s Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel signed a 5-year research agreement with Dalhousie University’s Jeff Dahn, Li-ion battery researcher with the Faculty of Science, and his group of students, postdoctoral researchers and technical staff. The new collaboration, a first between the leading American electric vehicle company and a Canadian university, will bring together the teams of Dahn and Tesla’s Director of Battery Technology, Kurt Kelty.

Tesla previews “Roadster 3.0” update; 70 kWh pack

In a post on the company blog, Tesla Motors outlined the areas addressed with an upcoming a Roadster 3.0 Tesla also said no new Model S battery pack or major range upgrade is expected in the near term. Tesla said it has identified a new LI-ion cell that has 31% more energy than the original Roadster cell. Using modern computational methods, Tesla expects to make a 15% improvement, dropping the total C d down to 0.31

Mercedes-Benz presenting new battery-electric B-Class concept at Paris show

Mercedes-Benz will present a battery-powered electric concept variant of the B-Class at the Paris Motor Show, reportedly developed in partnership with Tesla Motors. The Concept B-Class Electric Drive is equipped with a 100 kW electric motor with 310 N·m (221 lb-ft) of torque provide for attractive driving dynamics over a range of 200 kilometers (124 miles).
