Amid a flood of new competition, Ford is shifting plans to build more affordable electric vehicles. Ford’s CEO Jim Farley reiterated his concerns over the low-cost overseas rivals during a Wolfe Research conference last month. The American automaker’s leader admitted larger EVs, like the F-150 Lightning , are expensive to build.

So far in North America, Ford has invested in the electric F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E based on adapted ICE platforms. “It’s non-negotiable that we’re going to allocate capital to a new affordable electric vehicle … and you have to make money in the first 12 months,” he said.
