Approximately 6 billion gallons of fuel are wasted in the US each year as vehicles wait at stop lights or sit in dense traffic with engines idling, according to US Department of Energy estimates. The team’s first step in February 2018 was to use GRIDSMART cameras to create an image dataset of vehicle classes.

I love that my EV is so efficient: EVs convert over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels. In light of the current spike in gasoline prices, the savings on fueling costs with EVs are even greater. Last summer, my wife and I drove to Grand Haven, MI for a week’s vacation.

The deuterated erbium (chemical symbol ErD 3 ) is placed into thumb-size vials, as shown in this set of samples from a 20 June 2018 experiment. And as the technology matures, it could also find uses here on Earth, such as for small power plants for individual buildings, which would reduce fossil-fuel dependency and increase grid resiliency.
