Honda unveiled the new 10th-generation 2016 Civic Sedan, slated for sale in the US this fall. The 2016 Civic will feature two all-new engines, including the first application of Honda turbo engine technology in the US. Both engines are targeted to receive EPA highway fuel economy ratings in excess of 40 mpg.

In a comparison study with Honda Fit, the standard equipment achieved 36 mpg and with Pinnacle’s technology the same automobile achieved 57 mpg.

The US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) to begin developing new standards for greenhouse gases and fuel economy for light-duty vehicles for the 2017-2025 model years. The resulting set of new standards will cover model years 2012-2016, and will require an average fuel economy standard of 35.5 mpg in 2016 (39 mpg for cars, 30 mpg for trucks), or approximately 250 grams CO 2 /mile.

By way of trans-Atlantic comparison, 95 g/km is equivalent to 152 g/mile; the current US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) greenhouse gas emissions standard (part of the joint national standard with NHSTA) calls for 250 g/mile in MY 2016. The proposed 2025 US standard would bring that down to 163 g/mile in MY 2025.
