Another of the five goals is for the Department of the Navy to reduce petroleum use in its 50,000 strong commercial fleet by half by 2015. Moving to biofuels and electric vehicles will benefit the local communities where our bases are located and will spur adoption of similar vehicles in those neighborhoods.

Recent estimates for fuel cell vehicles show the cost dropping from several hundred thousand dollars today to roughly $75,000 in 2015 and $50,000 or less in 2020.

While current state and federal measures are on target to reduce toxic diesel locomotive emissions 65% or more by 2020, additional measures recommended by ARB staff would ultimately provide up to 85% or greater emissions reductions within the rail yards over the same period, resulting in cleaner air for nearby residential neighborhoods as well.

This work is intended to enable market introduction of various electric vehicle technologies by lowering the cost of battery packs, batteries, and electric propulsion systems for EDVs through high-volume manufacturing. The award recipient cost share is required to be 50% or higher of the total allowable costs of the project.

Developed in partnership with Commercial Fleet Financing, the shuttle bus is projected to be delivered in early 2018. The cost of the shuttle was funded in part by the California Air Resource Board's Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP).
