The analysis covered 23 markets in Europe and found a direct correlation between diesel car registrations and average CO2 emissions. With increased negative public perception towards diesels, combined with new government regulations such as WLTP and scrutiny of the fuel type, demand for diesel fell by 18% in 2018.

The average CO 2 emissions level of a new car sold in 2013 was 127 g CO 2 /km; the target for 2015 was 130 g/km. The average per-km CO 2 emissions for gasoline-fueled cars was 128.62

The current European regulation on cars and CO 2 strives to achieve a 130 g/km average figure by 2015. Automaker targets for 2015 are differentiated on the basis of the weight of the vehicles they produce in 2015 compared with the average weight of the vehicles the entire industry will produce over the 2011-13 period.

Moving goods by road consumes about 50% of all diesel produced; 80% of the global net increase in diesel use since 2000 comes from road freight. Furthermore, road freight activity is set to more than double from 2015 to 2050. Ambitious fuel economy and CO 2 emission standards will help widespread deployment of these measures.

Fiat has the lowest average CO2 emissions figure on all cars sold in Europe the latest figures show. The new figure – corroborated by automotive data provider, JATO – means that Fiat is the only mainstream car brand to achieve the European average goal, of 130 g/km by 2015, five years early. If taken from such sources, hydrogen is a fossil fuel, and is not a renewable resource. In addition, it is subject to similar refining, storage and distribution costs currently associated with petrol and diesel, including upstream CO2 emissions where the electricity required is usually generated from fossil fuels.
